Matt checked the hives today. They look pretty healthy except that one is currently battling an ant invasion.
Matt added a super to the other hive. To help the one with the ant invasion he took steps to keep more ants from getting in (added containers of water to the legs of the hive base to create an "ant moat", and sprinkled diatomaceous earth around that). He also moved some frames around which allowed the bees to more easily reach the ants that had gotten in. Bees will protect their hives from intruders, like ants, by literally throwing the invaders out. Sure enough, later you could see piles of ant eggs and ants on the ground in front of the hive.
