There were 2 little guinea eggs on the floor of their coop today. These are the first ones. So now we know that we have at least one female, although I suspect we have more. (I wasn't able to go out yesterday due to a severe storm warning, so one guinea hen could have laid one egg per day.) I constructed a nesting box and placed in on the floor today. We'll see if they actually use it.
Just to give size context, this is a picture of a guineafowl egg next to chicken eggs. The egg on the left is Vanna's (she lays extra-large eggs), the white one is Miss Prissy's (her eggs are average sized for our flock), next is Cocoa (she is one of our young hens who just started laying this spring, so her eggs are still a little small), and finally, on the right is a guineafowl egg.
Guinea egg taste test:
After we finally got the egg open (the shell is a lot tougher to crack than a chicken egg), Matt fried it up for breakfast. It tasted basically like a chicken egg, but a little richer. It has been decided...we will eat guinea eggs.
